ATI Appoints New Chief Underwriting Officer

Nairobi, Kenya, June 22, 2005.

The African Trade Insurance Agency (ATI), Africa’s first and only multilateral export credit agency is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Roland Pladet to the role of Chief Underwriting Officer. He will Lead the Underwriting Team at ATI and coordinate, manage and oversee the day to day underwriting operations of the Agency. In welcoming Mr. Pladet to the ATI Team, Mr. Astère Girukwigomba, Chairman of the ATI Board of Directors observed that “Mr. Pladet brings to ATI a perfect mix of private and public sector experience gained over a period of over 16 years of direct involvement in providing insurance and guarantee support to trade and investment transactions in developing and emerging economies. Attracting staff with his skills is part of ATI’s strategy for becoming a world class insurer of political and credit risks in Africa”.

Mr. Pladet has been with ABN AMRO in Amsterdam overseeing the sourcing and negotiation of political and commercial cross-border risk mitigation instruments for ABN AMRO’s Cross Border Structured Finance business. Prior to joining ABN AMRO in May 2001, Mr. Pladet held several positions with the World Bank Group’s Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) in Washington, DC from October 1994 to April 2001: as Guarantee Officer – Latin America & Caribbean (until December 1997), Regional Manager – Africa & Middle East (until July 1999) and Global Manager – Agribusiness, Manufacturing and Services (until April 2001). Before joining MIGA, Mr. Pladet was with Atradius (formerly Netherlands Export Credit Insurance Company – NCM) in Amsterdam from April 1989 to October 1994. Mr. Pladet holds a M.A. in Economics from Tilburg University, Tilburg, The Netherlands, since 1988 and has successfully concluded the World Bank Group’s Executive Development Program and International Project Finance Training at Harvard Business School, Cambridge, MA in 2001.

Mr. Caroli Omondi, ATI’s Acting Chief Executive Officer observed that “the arrival of Mr. Pladet in ATI will enhance the Underwriting Team’s capabilities while at the same time strengthen ATI’s partnership arrangements with AIG, Atradius, MIGA, Lloyd’s of London, OND Ducroire (Belgium), Zurich, Chubb, Exporters, ODL (Luxembourg), Sovereign and Unistrat and other partners with whom he has worked before. He will be a real asset”.

Mr. Pladet will assume his new role at ATI Headquarters in Nairobi on September 19, 2005.
